Social justice has become a highly controversial and politicized term. But the teachings of Christ are clear: ‘Whatever you did for one of these least brothers of mine, you did for me.’ We, as disciples of Christ, and as citizens of this country, have a right to speak out and a duty to end injustice and suffering.

What is political theology?

We the people of faith, in order to form a more perfect union ...

do not have to tolerate the hate-driven actions of our federal government. We have First Amendments rights that protect us in speaking out against unjust laws and policies. We are even protected in speaking in the public square about our faith. We the people of faith must speak out when our government marginalizes people.

People often feel like they can’t make a difference. But remember, Jesus, the 12 disciples, and women and men alike, changed the world. Take heart and do something for justice. You will help someone, you will send a strong message that you’re not having injustice. You will feel better because you are contributing to a more just society, and your spiritual life will deepen. Let’s work for justice together.

Confusion exists about how charities can be active in politics. Marcia Ledford helps congregations understand what charities and individuals can do in legally in exercising their constitutional rights. The aim of political theology is not to establish a supreme religion. Its aim is to participate as one of hopefully many different voices of faith who work for a more just society.

"I loved this workshop. Marcia clears ups so much of the confusion around this important matter of how we speak to vital political issues as the Church. Her teaching style and passion have encouraged me and stayed with me."
The Rev. Teresa Wakeen
"Before Marcia’s presentation about political theology, I felt paralyzed about what to do, and now I feel energized."
